We Are All an Illusion: The Greatest Illusionist
The greatest illusionist
In the *Man* chapter, Alfas B makes a claim that sounds startling until you sit with it:
"Human consciousness is an illusion that experiences reality — an illusion crafted by God, the greatest illusionist. To a human, the world feels real and God seems an illusion. But to God, everything He created is an illusion, and He alone is the only true reality."
Two directions of disbelief
Notice the symmetry. We struggle to believe in God — the invisible one. And yet, the book suggests, God looks at our solid, visible world and sees it as the illusion. Both beings are certain their mirror image is the real one. The difference is that God holds the whole picture; we hold only a fragment.
The strange comfort
If our self is "a construction of thoughts," as the *Farewell* chapter insists, we might expect despair. Instead, the book finds liberation:
- If the self is an illusion, then your mistakes are not permanent verdicts on a permanent soul — they are temporary notes in a dream you can learn to dream differently.
- If the world is an illusion, then its grip on your peace is looser than you think.
- And if all is well within a divine dream, then there is a larger intelligence holding everything together.
Not less real — differently real
The book does not say the illusion is worthless. Far from it:
"Yet within these illusions, we find meaning, purpose, and joy — Perhaps that is why God made them: to feel, to experience, to be alive."
To be an illusion in a divine dream is not to be nothing. It is to be *felt*. The whole purpose of the dream is experience — joy, love, wonder, growth. It is the most passionate reason to be alive.
Awake within the dream
The book's invitation is not to escape the illusion but to recognize it — and, recognizing it, to dream well. To be present, to be kind, to love fully, to keep the mind clear enough that the "I" behind the illusion can shine through.
We are all an illusion, yes. But we are an illusion being *dreamed with infinite care*.
