The Self Is an Observer: Watching the World From Within

The Self Is an Observer: Watching the World From Within

The watcher inside you

There is a part of you that is not your thoughts. You can feel it on a still evening, or in the gap between a stimulus and your reaction — a quiet witness that simply *watches*. *Nature of the Divine* gives this watcher a name and a place:

"We, the self, exist as an observer reflecting the divine harmony of God, as a friend to our soul, born by the perception of reality in the form of thoughts."

The observer and the thoughts it holds

The book is careful here: the self is *born* by thoughts, shaped and identified by them. And yet it is also an *observer* — a point of witnessing that stands behind the stream of thinking.

"We, the self, are an observer, a man of thoughts, with the intervention of repetitive thoughts that are seeded and nurtured in the mind by ourselves and every other external condition."

So we contain both: the churning thoughts, and the stillness that watches them. This is not a contradiction — it is the whole point. The thoughts determine how we *identify*, but the observer is what we *are* in our deepest, quietest state.

The reflection clears when the mind clears

The book teaches that the self reflects the divine "in its purest form" when the mind is still and free from distraction:

"This allows the self to reflect the divine nature of our mind to the outside world in its purest form. In other words, we are accepting God."

A muddy mirror reflects nothing clearly. A still one reflects the sky. Your thoughts are the dust on the mirror; the observer is the mirror itself. Keep it still, and what it reflects is divine harmony.

A practice for the observer

  • Notice the watcher — next time a strong emotion rises, feel the part of you that notices it without being swept away.
  • Don't fight the thoughts — let them pass; the observer is not the thought, and needn't wrestle it.
  • Rest in the gap — the space between thoughts is where the observer lives most clearly.

The friend of the soul

Most beautifully, the book calls the self "a friend to our soul." Not a servant, not a rival — a companion. The observer walks through life beside the soul, witnessing, and when the mind is clear, the witnessing becomes divine.

You are not your thoughts. You are the one who notices them. That is the observer — and it is holy.

This reflection is a companion to Nature of the Divine by *Alfas B* — a spiritual philosophy book on consciousness, the soul journey, and inner peace. When an article like this resonates, the full journey continues in the book.
