Washing the Dishes: A Meditation on Ordinary Life
The unremarkable teacher
Washing the dishes seems like the opposite of a spiritual practice — a chore, a nuisance, something to rush through. But the great teachers of mindfulness disagree. They call attention to the ordinary precisely because it is where most of life happens. If you cannot be present at the sink, what good is your presence on a cushion?
The practice in the suds
Here is a simple way to turn washing dishes into meditation:
- Feel the water — its temperature against your hands.
- See the soap — the bubbles, the light moving across them.
- Touch each item — the texture of ceramic, glass, the shape in your grip.
- Hear the sounds — the water, the clink, the hum of the moment.
- Notice when you drift — the mind wants to escape to somewhere more interesting; gently return it to the plate in your hands.
You are not trying to be amazing at washing dishes. You are practicing being *here* — which is the whole of the spiritual life, applied to the sink.
The point of the ordinary
Why does this matter? Because your life is made of ordinary moments — the dishes, the commute, the waiting, the routine. If they are all done on autopilot, lived in a blur while the mind is elsewhere, then you are missing most of your life. Mindfulness in the ordinary reclaims those hours. The life that is lived at the sink is a life that is actually lived.
The divine in the everyday
*Nature of the Divine* teaches that the mind is kept clear by attention, not by escaping into special states. "One who masters the mind," it says, focuses and steadies attention. And it locates the sacred in the natural, the ordinary — the sun, the rhythm of day and night, the vessel kept empty. There is no moment too small to be sacred if you are truly in it.
The life beneath the surface
Next time you face the dishes, do not rush. Slow down, feel the warm water, and let the simple task become a doorway back to the present. In washing one dish fully, you practice washing your whole life fully — present, alive, and at peace. And a life lived like that, ordinary moment by ordinary moment, is a life that is deeply, quietly spiritual.
