Why You Keep Overthinking Your Spiritual Awakening (and How to Stop)

The trap of spiritual striving

Here is an irony the spiritual path loves to expose: we can use *spirituality itself* to feed the ego. Instead of becoming quieter, we become busier — chasing deeper meditations, rarer experiences, better techniques, and the identity of being "advanced." This is called spiritual materialism, and nearly everyone on the path meets it.

The sign you are caught

How do you know if you are overthinking your awakening? Ask yourself:

  • Do I feel like I should be "further along" than I am?
  • Do I compare my practice or experience to others?
  • Is my word on the matter (meditation, awakening, divine) more important to me than the experience itself?
  • Do I use spiritual vocabulary to feel superior?

If several of these ring true, the ego has quietly taken the wheel — even while pointing at the divine.

Awakening is not a possession

Awakening is not a trophy you earn or a state you take permanent ownership of. It is an ongoing, moment-by-moment opening — and the moment you grasp at it, it slips away. The grasping is the ego; the opening is what remains when grasping stops.

How to stop overthinking

  • Return to the breath — when you catch yourself spiraling about your progress, drop it and breathe.
  • Practice without an audience — meditate for the sake of being present, not for a scorecard.
  • Notice the "shoulds" — every "I should be..." is the ego measuring; let it go.
  • Do ordinary things fully — fold the laundry, wash the dishes, walk — with attention. This is as spiritual as any retreat.

The quiet return

*Nature of the Divine* teaches that "an empty vessel contains the spirit of God." The ego wants the vessel *full* — full of achievements, experiences, and self-certainty. But the divine is found in the emptying. Stop trying to be awake, and simply be present. It is in the letting go — not the striving — that awakening finds you.
