Man Is a Society of Soul, Body and Mind

Man Is a Society of Soul, Body and Mind

You are not one thing

We speak of ourselves in the singular — "I," "me," "mine" — as though we were a single, simple thing. *Nature of the Divine* complicates this picture beautifully:

"A man is not one entity, but a society of soul, body and mind."

Three citizens, one life

Think of yourself as a small society, with three distinct members:

  • The soul — the divine reflection of God within you, eternal and guiding.
  • The body — your form, your mother in the book's imagery, born of the cosmos, returning to dust.
  • The mind — the vessel of thoughts, your identity, the "observer" that walks through the world.

Each has its role. The book says the soul made a body and "there manifested an empty vessel — our Mind," from which arose "a mental being, the observer of the cosmos, a man of thoughts, born by his father — the Soul, and his mother — the body."

The identity is the thoughts

In this society, who are *you*? The book's answer is precise:

"His identity is determined by the thoughts he fills in the vessel of his mind."

This is why the book places so much weight on the mind — because the "you" that you think you are is built, thought by thought, from what fills that vessel. Change the thoughts and you change the identity. Keep the vessel clear and you make room for the soul to lead.

The danger of a chaotic society

A society functions well when its members are in right relation. When the mind is overrun with thoughts, the book says, it acts like a riot within you:

"The nearly infinite thoughts that exist in this world will surely cause chaos in a human mind."

The work, then, is to restore order to this inner society — to let the soul guide, the body be honored, and the mind be kept clear.

Living well as an inner society

  • Honor the body — rest, movement, care; it is your home.
  • Clear the mind — meditation, stillness, so thoughts don't govern.
  • Let the soul lead — when the mind is quiet, the soul's promptings become audible.

A community of one

The image of yourself as a society is not just poetic — it is practical. It reminds you that your inner life is a relationship, not a monologue. When you care for your body, clear your mind, and listen to your soul, you keep good order in the one society that will always be with you: yourself.
