What the ego actually is

The ego is not a devil to be vanquished. It is a collection of beliefs about who you are — your name, roles, achievements, opinions, and wounds. It is the story you tell about yourself, repeated until it feels like the whole truth. And like any costume worn too long, it can become heavy.

The weight you carry

Think of everything the ego must defend: its image, its rightness, its status, its history of grievances. Defending all of that is exhausting. The spiritual traditions point to a lighter way — the freedom of not needing to protect a self that was never solid to begin with.

Seeing through the story

The first step is noticing that your identity is a story. When you feel the urge to be right, or to prove yourself, or to cling to an old wound, recognize it for what it is: the ego protecting its narrative. You are not that narrative. You are the awareness that can *watch* the story without being ruled by it.

• Stop rehearsing grievances — each rehearsal tightens the cloak.
• Let go of comparison — the ego measures; the soul simply is.
• Welcome not-knowing — defensiveness relaxes when you admit you may be wrong.

The self beneath the cloak

When the heavy cloak of ego loosens, what remains is not emptiness but lightness. *Nature of the Divine* offers a gentle image: "allowing our mind to be light as a feather, our thoughts silent as the void." Beneath the ego's noise is a quiet, spacious self — freer, kinder, and far more real than the defensive character you learned to play. Let the cloak fall. The feather was there all along.
