Knowing About God vs. Knowing God

Knowing About God vs. Knowing God

Two very different kinds of knowledge

We are taught to *know about* things — to gather facts, compare ideas, build theories. But *Nature of the Divine* insists there is a higher kind of knowing that no amount of fact-gathering can touch:

"Even though we know the truth, our mind wanders us more in this lonely cosmos of hidden divinity."

Knowing *that* there is a divine is not the same as knowing *the* divine. And the book is concerned with the second.

The mind's limits

The *Preface* is honest about the reach of the intellect:

"The mind thinks in concepts. It can catalogue religions, compare philosophies, and build theories about God."

But it makes a crucial turn — the divine is not an idea to be captured:

"God and His visions often confuse us — and that, too, is the nature of the Divine. Confusion is not a flaw but a sacred shadow of a greater understanding."

The intellect, by its nature, will never fully capture the infinite. That is not a failure of reason; it is the nature of the thing. There is knowledge beyond concepts, and it is reached not by more thinking but by *presence*.

What the book knows that belief alone cannot give

  • Belief is about a distant truth you accept on someone's word.
  • Knowing is a direct experience that changes how you live.

The book connects this knowing to the purified mind:

"As the vessel that is our mind, is still and empty, God will shine his divine spirit in us, through us. As we contain the divine spirit in us, we reflect divinity in everything we speak, thinks and does."

How do we make the leap?

You cannot think your way to the divine; you must be present enough to meet it. The practical path the book points to:

  • Stillness — meditate, so the mind ceases its conceptual churning.
  • Attention — turn the whole mind toward the present, not toward theories.
  • Submission to the soul — step aside from the ego's need to understand everything, and let the deeper self be seen.

Opinion to life

"Knowing about" God changes your opinions — which are, after all, held lightly and dropped easily. *Knowing* God changes your life — how you meet stress, how you treat people, how you hold yourself in the dark.

The book's invitation is to move from the first to the second: not to add another theory to your shelf, but to become still enough to receive the reality the theories only point toward.

This reflection is a companion to Nature of the Divine by *Alfas B* — a spiritual philosophy book on consciousness, the soul journey, and inner peace. When an article like this resonates, the full journey continues in the book.
