God Made Man in His Image: What the Image Actually Is
The oldest claim about us
"Made in the image of God" is among the most famous and most misunderstood phrases in all of spirituality. *Nature of the Divine* opens its *Man* chapter with it:
"God made man in his image, like every other creation."
The image is not the body
Notice the crucial word: *"like every other creation."* If man is made in God's image *like every other creation*, then the "image" cannot be a literal bodily resemblance — God has no body. The image must be something deeper, something shared by all that is made.
Drawing on the book's own logic, what is that shared likeness? It is the intelligence — the divine intelligence that is "the essence of existence."
"From the infinite intelligence of God, manifested humans from a biological singularity that evolved into sentient conscious-beings over time."
The image is consciousness
If the essence of existence is intelligence, and man is made in the image of God, then the image of God in man is consciousness itself — the capacity to know, to witness, to reflect. That is why the book says:
"The mental structure that shapes us is the most complex engineering marvel that God has ever made."
And:
"Human consciousness... is a mental being living in a biological body, all born from the soul that was manifested by the same divine being who manifested the cosmos."
Intricate, conscious, and alive
The book roots this image in the very fabric of our being:
"God's greatest creation — the human being — is a system of energy, intricately designed to simulate chemical reactions that sustain a biological body and a biologically simulated mind. Within the mind, consciousness and subconscious awareness are manifested, giving rise to the observer."
We carry the image of God not in our shape but in our *awareness* — the observer, the witness, the one who can look at creation and know it.
What the image demands of us
If your deepest likeness to God is consciousness and intelligence, then:
- You are made to know — to seek truth, to understand.
- You are made to witness — to behold the divine in all things.
- You are made to create — to express the intelligence that is your essence, as God expressed it in the cosmos.
A dignity that needs no crown
You don't need to be noticed, ranked, or crowned to be significant. You were made in the image of the Infinite — not in body, but in the very consciousness that lets you read these words. Honor that image: think clearly, witness fully, create bravely, and let the divine intelligence that is your essence shine.
