What Forgiveness Really Means (and How to Practice It)

What Forgiveness Really Means (and How to Practice It)

The misunderstanding

Many people refuse forgiveness because they mistake it for approval. They fear that forgiving means saying the harm was okay, or that they are weak, or that the other person "wins." So they hold the grudge — and all the while, the grudge is holding *them*.

Forgiveness is for yourself

The deepest truth about forgiveness is that it is primarily for *you*. Resentment is a weight you carry that the other person might never know about. Forgiveness does not free the one who harmed you; it frees you from carrying them. It is not a gift you give away — it is a weight you set down.

What forgiveness is not

  • It is not excusing or minimizing the harm.
  • It is not reconciliation (you can forgive and still keep healthy boundaries).
  • It is not forgetting or pretending it did not happen.
  • It is not weakness.

Forgiveness is the decision to stop paying interest on a debt you were never going to collect.

A step-by-step approach

1. Acknowledge the harm — name what happened and how it affected you, honestly.
2. Feel the feeling — allow the anger or grief to be present without acting on it.
3. Choose to release — forgive not because they deserve it, but because *you* deserve peace.
4. Release the role — the other need not be present, or even know, for you to forgive.
5. Repeat as needed — forgiveness is often a process, not a single moment.

The freedom underneath

*Nature of the Divine* points to the peace that comes from releasing the mind's hold: "an empty vessel contains the spirit of God." A mind filled with resentment has no room for anything else. Letting go of the old anger clears the vessel — and in the clearing, room returns for peace, lightness, and the divine. Forgiveness is not the absence of pain; it is the end of being ruled by it.
