Stop Comparing: The Endless Race You Were Never Meant to Run

Stop Comparing: The Endless Race You Were Never Meant to Run

The race that cannot be won

Social comparison is one of the most reliable sources of unhappiness we know. Someone is always more accomplished, more beautiful, more successful. And because the measuring sticks multiply endlessly, no amount of achievement ends the comparison — it only finds a higher ledge to glance at. Comparison is a race with no finish line, run against an opponent who is always ahead in some category.

The distortion of comparison

When you compare, you are not seeing the truth — you are seeing a curated highlight reel. Others show their wins, their beauty, their shining moments, and hide the struggle, luck, and cost. You compare your messy, full, private reality against their polished, public surface. It is an unfair contest that you are doomed to lose, and it says nothing about your actual worth.

The self that comparison ignores

Deep down, the thing being compared — the surface self of achievements and looks — is not the deepest truth about you. *Nature of the Divine* teaches that "there is an 'I' beyond the self," a silent presence beneath the thoughts and roles. That deeper self cannot be ranked. It is not better or worse than another's; it simply is. Comparison only has power over the surface; it cannot touch the stillness within.

Choosing your own path

  • Limit the feed — comparison thrives on constant input; trim what feeds it.
  • Notice the impulse — when you feel the urge to rank yourself, see it as the comparison trap, not as truth.
  • Return to your own path — you are not running their race. What matters is whether you are true to *your* journey.
  • Measure by growth — compare yourself to who you were, not to who they appear to be.

The freedom of the singular

Every human being is a unique expression — a distinct fingerprint of the divine, as *Nature of the Divine* puts it. There is no one else who can walk your path, learn your lessons, or offer your gifts. The moment you stop measuring yourself against others, you are free to be fully, unapologetically yourself. Run your own race, at your own pace, toward your own true north. That is not loneliness; that is liberation.
